The hottest musician on the planet is also the hottest ticket in town.
Ed Sheeran’s return to Saskatoon — a July 23 concert at SaskTel Centre as part of his world tour — sold out Friday in about 30 minutes. Following various pre-sales this week, tickets priced at $117.50, $87.50 and $47.50 went on sale to the public Friday at 10 a.m. By 10:30, the show was considered a sellout, with less than 100 single seats available. Based on the stage set-up for Sheeran’s Saskatoon concert, capacity is about 12,500.
“It was pretty spectacular,” Scott Ford, SaskTel Centre’s executive director said of the ticket sales.
“We’re pretty happy. The expectations of the promoter is these shows would sell out around the continent.”
Sheeran’s newly-released album features hit singles ‘Shape of You,’ which reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, and ‘Castle On The Hill.’ As tickets went on sale for Sheeran’s show in Saskatoon, he held 16 of 20 spots in the United Kingdom’s official singles chart. Previous hits for the 26-year-old native of England include ‘Thinking Out Loud,’ ‘Sing,’ ‘Don’t,’ and ‘Photograph.’ He has been nominated for 11 Grammy Awards, winning twice for ‘Thinking Out Loud.’
The North American tour begins in Kansas City on June 29 and continues until Oct. 6 in Nashville. Other Canadian stops include Toronto (July 7), Quebec City (July 18), Montreal (July 19), Winnipeg (July 22), Edmonton (July 25) and Vancouver (July 28). Of the 46 cities on Sheeran’s North American tour, Saskatoon has the smallest metropolitan population of about 305,000. The next-lowest is Des Moines, Iowa, with a population of just under 570,000.
Sheeran previously drew a capacity crowd to SaskTel Centre on June 16, 2015.
