Tanis Robertson knew something was up when her husband Ross kicked her under the table at the restaurant they were dining at in Vancouver last weekend.

They’d been to the U2 concert the night before. And into the restaurant walked lead singer Bono.

After the couple waited a couple of hours, what followed was more than a fan’s dream, a chat with the rock star that lasted several minutes.

“It was a level above bucket list,” said Robertson, a financial planner in Saskatoon. She’s seen U2 five times over the past 20 years.

Earlier, she also caught the eye of guitarist The Edge. His security wouldn’t allow for a photo but he stopped and shook hands with her. “I said it was such a great show last night and he said thanks very much.”

The Vancouver concert was the first of the tour, and Bono was curious how it came off. He crossed his arms, put one hand on his chin, leaned in and asked Robertson specific questions like where they were sitting and what three moments of the show were her favourite.

“He was genuinely interested. I could tell he really wanted to know what we thought as fans about how they had laid the show out. It was just incredible to know that Bono was asking my opinion about what I thought of the first show of the tour.”

It was much more than she was expecting.

“Then I got to say thanks so much for the music and thanks for the joy and thanks for being the soundtrack to my life for the past 30 years. He said it’s been my privilege. And he shook my hand and said okay guys, see you later.

“I was just so surprised that he would take the time.”
